August Wilson Monologue Competition


National August Wilson Monologue Competition is a free arts education program, a celebration of the words of the playwright August Wilson, inspiring high school students to find and express themselves through theatre.


You must fill out an application in order to audition

Application Deadline

February 3, 2020.


Saturday, February 8, 2020 from 12-5pm at the Neil Morgan Auditorium at the San Diego Central Library. Students must select a monologue from the approved August Wilson Century Cycle monologues linked below. A monologue is a speech presented by a single character set within the context of the play. Students will not have to be available the entire day but will be given an audition time once they have submitted an application. Students will perform their monologues in front of a panel of judges, who will select 8-12 participants to move on.  

Master Classes

February 15, 22, 29, 2020 from 12-4pm at in the Neil Morgan Auditorium at the San Diego Central Library. Semi-finalists will receive training from professional actors and teaching artists to prepare them for the Regional Finals. 

Regional Finals

March 5, 2020 from 5-10pm at in the Neil Morgan Auditorium at the San Diego Central Library. Semi-Finalists compete, and 2 students will be selected as San Diego’s Regional Finalists. The third-place winner will receive $100, the second-place winner will receive $250, and the first-place winner will receive $500. First and second place students will also receive an all-expenses-paid trip to New York for a chance to compete at the National AWMC Finals on Broadway.

National Finals

May 4, 2020, in New York City at the August Wilson Theatre on Broadway. The first and second place regional winners from each city will compete at the National Finals. Students must be available for four full days of travel. Intrepid Theatre Company will provide chaperones. Parents, guardians, teachers, and other family and friends are welcome but will need to pay their own way. San Diego’s Regional Finalists, along with those from other cities, will see a Broadway production (or two!) and take in popular New York sites before competing. Students compete in front of a panel of celebrity judges. The night’s festivities also include performances by surprise theatrical and musical guests.
